Battery usage tips
There are various kinds of batteries that are available today, having various applications. It is difficult to discuss battery usage tips for all applications and only few of these are given below.
Battery usage for cell phones:
The battery that you use in your cell phone does not last more than 2 to 3 days, after which you will need the battery to be recharged. There are usually three types of batteries used in cell phones, and these are Li-Ion, NiMH, and Ni-Cd. Ni-Cd batteries are not much used in the present days. The charging process of Ni-Cd and NiMH batteries are the same, but Li-Ion batteries need to be handled in a careful manner.
Conserving energy in the battery depends completely upon battery usage. You should turn off all the features in your cell phones which you do not use regularly. Here are some tips:
- Turn off your Bluetooth, which draws heavy current from your battery.
- If you can manage without the vibration alert, turn it off.
- Turn off the sounds that you do not require, for example the "key click" sound.
- Turn down the brightness of your cell phone screen to an optimum viewing level.
- Shorten the time set for your back light to turn off. Cell phone screen back light consumes quite substantial power.
- Using applications in your cell phone consume power. If you are not using that, you would need to switch it off.
- Games always consume huge power. When you play games on your cell phone, think of the power that it consumes.
- Though the phone consumes very little power while not in active use, switch it off when you do not need to use it for long hours.
Cell phone batteries last for 2 to 3 days depending upon the battery usage. You would need to recharge your batter after that. As far as NiMH and Ni-Cd batteries are concerned, you must discharge the battery completely and then recharge it for full capacity charge. This process must be done at least 2 to 3 times, and should be repeated at least once a month to keep the battery healthy. As for Li-Ion batteries, you must not let the battery completely discharge. If you do so the cells in the battery can be permanently damaged.
Battery usage for Laptops:
There are three kinds of batteries that are used in Laptops, and these are NiCd, NiMH, and Li-Ion. Ni-Cd batteries are not much used in laptops today. Here are some battery usage tips for your laptop.
- When your laptop battery is new, it is in discharged condition, and the capacity is very low. You will need to discharge the battery completely at first before charging it. You may refer to the manual that came along with your laptop for further guidance.
- You would need to put your new laptop battery through cycles of charge and discharge. In this process the battery should be discharged completely (except Li-Ion) and recharged at least 3 to 4 times, before your battery attains the full capacity. This must be repeated at least once a month.
- If you have left your battery unused for a long period of time, the process of charging and discharging must be followed in order to bring back the battery in full charged condition.
- For storage purposes, your laptop battery should be stored in a cool and dry place, making sure that the cool environment should not be that cold for condensation to form on the battery surface.
- When put on charge, laptop batteries gets warm, but not excessively. You should take care that the battery does not get too warm. If this happens, there might be some problem either with your charger system or the battery itself. You must have the system checked by a qualified technician.
- At times a new battery in your laptop may indicate full charge within 15 minutes of charging. If this happens, you may take out the battery from your laptop and let it cool for about 15 minutes before putting it on to charge again. It may also refuse to be charged. If this happens, you may retry charging the battery again, after you take out the battery from your laptop and insert it again.
