Coin cell battery

You can find many applications of coin cell batteries powering electronic circuits. The shape of a coin cell battery is of a shape of a coin, with wafer thin housing, having conductive leads powering a chip. The battery has two surfaces, which respectively form the positive and the negative electrodes. The housing of the cell is round in shape and made of nickel or other metal, in which the top conducting surface is called the first polarity electrode contact, while its bottom surface is known as the second polarity contact. It is usually a disk shaped battery, and is generally found to power electronic equipments, such as computers, microprocessors, as additional power source or back up power source. The battery is found mounted on a printed circuit board by a battery connector and put in the cavity of the cell housing. The positive and negative terminals of the battery are connected to the battery housing, the two surfaces of which form the respective electrodes, being electrically connected to the printed circuit board.

A coin cell battery can be found on the mother board of a computer, which allows holding the BIOS and other important settings of the computer even when the power is turned off. It also maintains the computer clock, which otherwise would have needed to be reset each time the computer is switched on. It may also be found on wrist watches, pocket calculators, hearing aids, and similar compact portable electronics products, all of which are powered by battery cells. Coin cell batteries come in different sizes and specification, each meant for a specific application depending upon the device for which it is required. Different devices have different power requirement. The voltage of a coin cell battery depends upon the number of cells that have been connected in series to produce the battery. The chemical energy stored in the cells determines the capacity of a battery, and this capacity is defined at a given current requirement of a specific device.

Whenever you want to replace a coin battery in your electronic system make sure:

  • That the output of the battery that you want to purchase meets the requirement of the electronic device.
  • That the correct capacity has been specified in the battery specification, that matches the specification of the device operation.
  • The current drain of the coin cell battery that you buy must match with the requirement of the device you want to run. This would mean that the internal resistance of the battery should be lower than that of the device.

Coin cell batteries have become most popular in applications where small power is required, such as, in calculators, car remotes, Tools, Digital Electronics, and other several electronic devices. For replacement of such cells and find the size, all you need is to find the proper part number of the battery. These batteries are universal in sizes, which do not differ from brand to brand, and by matching up the part number you can easily locate the battery that you want.
