Computer batteries
Why does my computer need a battery?
The mother boards of most of the computers have a small battery and this computer battery is, at times, found to be soldered on the motherboard itself. However, the battery found in the motherboard is usually held in some sort of housing, so that the battery could be easily taken out for replacement. This kind of small battery is also being used in camcorders and digital cameras.
The function of this small battery in your computer is to power the BIOS and keep the real time clock alive when the computer is switched off. This quartz clock chip keeps on running by the help of the computer battery even when the computer is turned off. The BIOS in your computer needs to be kept powered because when you switch on your computer it uses the information from the BIOS to boot. When the battery runs out, even if your computer boots up, it will not show the correct date and time. There are many computers which are designed to store the information in a non-volatile RAM, and when it is switched off the information remains in the memory. Even if the battery fails, and the clock does not get power, the computer can boot up from the information held in the RAM, but would have the wrong time and date information.
All desk top computers and laptops, especially the ones with CMOS technology, virtually use computer batteries to retain the clock running and maintain the BIOS information. The types of batteries used, depend upon the manufacturer and the applications. While most of the computers use a single battery, there are those which use a computer and a resume battery. This resume battery is another type of computer battery which keeps alive the information in the RAM for the computer to properly boot up.
What are the types of computer battery?
Batteries that you instal in the computer keeps your real clock ticking and maintains the information required to boot the computer. This battery lasts for about few weeks, after which it would need to be replaced. If the battery runs out, you may lose all the information that is required for your computer to start. The replacement procedure of computer batteries is quite complicated, and it is more so in computers having two batteries.
The types of computer batteries vary, depending upon the connector type being used in your computer. The battery also depends on the voltage and the wiring of the computer. It is important to identify the type of battery that is being used in the computer before replacing it. The life of the battery would depend also on the kind of circuitry and the electronic components in the computer.
What are the categories of computer battery?
There are three categories of batteries that are used in computers. The first one is what is called the back-up battery, which is commonly referred to as the "CMOS battery". This holds your computer setting when the computer is powered off. The second type used in a computer, and mostly in lap tops, is called "bridge battery". This battery could be replaced without having the laptop switched off. The third category is the main battery, which is the main battery pack used for supplying back-up power to a laptop when it is not connected to the main power.
